Its banded, multi-colored varieties (like the purple-green pieces most commonly seen in carvings) form in hydrothermal veins where different mineral concentrations create distinct color zones. Major sources include China, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Fluorite is also fluorescent — it glows under UV light, and the word "fluorescence" is actually derived from Fluorite.
