Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral that commonly forms in hydrothermal veins. Specimens from the Erongo region of Namibia and parts of the Congo are especially prized by collectors for their exceptional clarity, vibrant coloration, and well-formed cubic crystals, often displaying striking hues of green, purple, and blue. Some pieces from these localities also exhibit color zoning or phantom growth patterns, adding to their visual appeal. Like all fluorite, these specimens can fluoresce under UV light—a property that gave rise to the term “fluorescence,” as fluorite was one of the first minerals observed to display this effect. With a relatively soft hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale, fluorite should be handled carefully to avoid scratches or damage.
