Apophyllite is a phyllosilicate mineral that forms in basalt cavities and hydrothermal veins, often alongside Stilbite, Prehnite, and other zeolite minerals. Its name comes from the Greek apo ("off") and phyllon ("leaf"), referring to the way it flakes when heated. The finest specimens come from Pune, India, where enormous, gem-quality clusters are found in basalt formations. Apophyllite is naturally transparent to translucent, and its high water content is thought to contribute to its exceptional clarity and light-transmitting properties.
