Living on the central west coast of Florida, I’m constantly surrounded by beauty. Sunshine, ocean air, palm trees swaying in the wind… it really is paradise.
And yet, even here, it’s easy to get swept away by modern life.
The to-do lists. The notifications. The endless stream of world events, opinions, worries, schedules, and responsibilities. One moment we’re thinking about what’s happening across the globe, and the next we’re trying to figure out what to make for dinner.
It can feel like our attention is constantly being pulled somewhere else.
But every now and then, I remember something simple:
The only moment that truly exists is this one.
Right now.
Not yesterday. Not the imagined future. Not the conversation replaying in our minds from three days ago. Just this moment.
And there’s something incredibly powerful about that.
Because this present moment is where life actually happens. It’s where we breathe. Where we love. Where we notice beauty. Where we choose what energy we carry forward.
There’s a reason gratitude has such a profound effect on people. Gratitude gently pulls us back into the present. It reminds us to appreciate what is instead of constantly fearing what might be.
And from that place, something shifts.
Not because we suddenly ignore hardship or pretend life is always easy. But because the energy we bring into the present moment shapes the way we experience the moments that follow.
Worry, fear, and anxiety have a way of coloring the future before it even arrives. But presence, appreciation, and peace can do the same thing in a completely different direction.
I’m reminded of a story from The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff — one of my favorite books.
In the book, Pooh is enjoying a beautiful day and the author, who has been having conversations with Pooh throughout the entire book, attempts to prove that there are terrible things happening in the world that Pooh should be deeply concerned about. He does this by flipping through news stations and then asks Pooh his opinion of it all.
Pooh simply says:
“It’s a beautiful day.”
I love that.
Not because Pooh is ignoring reality. Not because hardship doesn’t exist. But because there is wisdom in refusing to abandon the beauty of the present moment, even while the world continues being the world.
There will always be reasons to worry. Always something demanding our attention. Always another problem waiting to be solved.
But there is also sunlight on your skin.
A deep breath.
A meaningful conversation.
A quiet moment.
A favorite song.
A cup of coffee.
A crystal sitting in your hand reminding you to slow down for just a second.
Life is happening now.
And maybe today, despite everything, it really is a beautiful day.
