The Scent

Frankincense is the resin of the Boswellia tree, tapped from the bark and dried into golden tears. Burned, it is warm and resinous with a clean, slightly citrus lift — the smell of churches, mosques and temples across three thousand years.

How to Use It

Dhoop sticks are thick and have no bamboo core, so they need a holder: stand one in the small burner that comes with the pack, on a heat-safe surface. Light the tip, let it flame for ten seconds, then blow it out so it smoulders — it smokes more heavily than a thin stick, so crack a window. Never leave it burning unattended.

In Tradition

Frankincense is one of the oldest offerings there is: burned in Egyptian temples, carried up the incense road out of Oman and Yemen, named among the gifts of the Magi. It is the incense for setting a place apart — prayer, meditation, consecrating an altar or a new room. Light it when you want the space to know something is beginning.
