The Scent

Palo Santo — sweet, warm and resinous wood with a touch of mint and citrus — the holy wood of South America, in a stick so it burns without the flame. Sandalwood — creamy, soft, milky-sweet sandalwood — the scent of Indian temples and wedding paste, and the base note of most Indian incense.

How to Use It

Light the tip, let it flame for a few seconds, then blow it out so the ember glows. Stand it in an ash catcher, or push the bare end into a bowl of sand or rice, and open a window a crack — incense is meant to drift, not fill. Never leave it burning unattended; keep it away from curtains, children and pets.

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) is burned across Peru and Ecuador to lift a space after it has been cleared; in Sacred Crystals' teaching, sage clears and Palo Santo gets the energy dancing.
