Obsidian is volcanic glass, and it is the one crystal that really isn't a crystal. Obsidian occurs when lava flows and cools fast with little opportunity for crystal growth. Lava is fertile — not only for the soil it enriches, but as a growth matrix for crystals. However, heat also helps that growth, so if the lava cools fast we get glass.
This is no ordinary glass though. This is glass fired in the kiln of Pele herself, and She is one POWERFUL Goddess. Pele is the Fire Goddess and the creator of the Islands of Hawaii. She is a powerful protector, and one who is constantly ebbing and flowing to find balance.
Obsidian flows with the energy of protection. It is a fierce mirror of the energy being sent toward you. It sends negative energy right back to its source. It says, "Talk to the hand!" and sends that bad mojo back.
It is quite famous, being used by magicians and sorcerers and royalty. Nostradamus, the famous French intuitive from the 16th century, used an Obsidian scrying mirror to predict future events — some coming true as late as the 20th century, while some are predicted to come true for us still in our future. Queen Elizabeth I had a royal magician, John Dee, who used a Crystal Egg and an Obsidian Mirror to divine the future for the monarch.

About the Stone
Obsidian, being glass, is usually quite glassy, especially if tumbled or polished. Raw pieces look as you would expect raw glass to look, and can be quite sharp.
Care
Raw obsidian can be sharp at the edges — handle rough pieces with care. Cleanse with sage or moonlight.
