About the Stone
Petrified wood is fossilized wood in which the original tree has been replaced by silica, molecule by molecule, preserving the grain and the growth rings — the grain you can see is the grain of a real tree, now made of quartz. "A Forest Turned to Stone" is not a metaphor.
