About the Stone

Star Ruby is red corundum — crystalline aluminium oxide, Mohs 9, second only to diamond. Fine needles of rutile grow inside the crystal in three directions, and light reflecting off all three at once makes a six-rayed star that moves as the stone moves (asterism). The very inclusions that make it opaque are what make the star, which is why it is sold honestly as Opaque Ruby.

Care

Among the most durable stones we sell — safe for water, salt and sunlight; warm soapy water and a soft brush. It will scratch nearly everything else, so store it separately, and keep the polished dome unscratched: the star only shows on a smooth curved surface under a single light. Cleanse it with sage or moonlight.
