White nephrite is the low-iron end of the nephrite series, which is why it is white rather than green. Nephrite's toughness comes from tightly interwoven fibres — a stone whose strength is its interlocking, and the reason jade has been carved for thousands of years. The finest white nephrite is China's prized 'mutton fat jade'.
