Black Onyx is typically chalcedony that has been dyed black — a practice that dates back to ancient Rome, where natural chalcedony was treated with sugar solution and then acid to create the deep black color. Most Black Onyx on the market today is treated in this way, which is entirely standard and accepted in the gem trade. It's found worldwide, with major sources in Brazil, India, and Uruguay.
