Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of lazurite (blue), calcite (white), and pyrite (gold). The finest Lapis has been mined in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan for over 6,000 years — the same mines that supplied ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Ground Lapis was used to create ultramarine, one of the most prized pigments in Renaissance painting. Indian Lapis Lazuli is also highly regarded, with deposits found in several regions of the country.
